Something interesting about the book am reading

The book I am reading is the Darkest Evening of the Year. So far it involves two people rescuing a golden retriever from an abusive home, but I don't get why the rescue the dog and not the little kids in the abusive home.

A long time ago during winter and small white and brown Chihuahua escaped from his amazing home. The small Chihuahua was hypnotized by an amazing smell that was coming from the other side of the fence. This small Chihuahua used his proboscis nose to make a hole and get to the other side and find out what smelled so good. When the small Chihuahua made it to the other side of the fence he was transformed by what he saw, a huge piece of meat unattended. The small Chihuahua immediately began to imagine how delious it would be to eat the meat but the Chihuahua  thought about it, and realized if he ate the piece of meat he would get accused of eating and get into a lot of trouble. Then he realized it was a dream and went back to sleep.
